[atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=border,0,true] [atrb=style, width:500px; border-top: solid 5px #0066B3, bTable] [atrb=style, background-color: #111111; border-bottom: solid 5px #0066B3, btable] The entire day so far had seemed as if a dream. She’d gotten the call yesterday that she’d been accepted for the posting. An internship at Justice Tower… hundreds of other applicants had tried as she had, for this position, and they’d been turned down in her favor.
To her mind it was another sign that Fate was on her side.
She had woken at four am that morning, unable to sleep longer, and showered. She spent time brushing and drying her long black locks, tying them back in a French-style braid which still made it more than half way down her back. She put eye drops in her green ice chip eyes; the lack of the sleep would not ruin her game face. She needed, and desired, no make-up. Her day-time-self needed no mask between her and the world, no matter what else.
Next, she ate. She had no desire to get into her work clothes only to mess them with something from breakfast. It was simple cold fair, an apple sliced, a clementine, a filter-bottle of water. She needn’t eat much, and heavy food displeased her. If one needed to be sharp it was better to be slightly hungry, it kept one on one’s toes. She dressed in a utilitarian, but not uncomfortably. Black was the predominate color. She donned a black leotard and tights under a black skirt suit, a peacock blue button-up, a short black tie, and topped it all off with a black duster. Her shoes were a favored pair of black tie-up ballet slippers. She made sure she had all of her paper work in her solid black leather and titanium briefcase. She’d had it specially made, so that it wouldn’t ever accidentally be mistaken for another.
Everything about her dress and manner radiated a studied care which, while extreme, was also so much a part of her that it could not have seemed false.
And it hadn’t let her down, that care. With excellent grades, good extracurriculars in the stacks at her old school’s library, and that care, she’d beaten out all of the other candidates for this position.
So she sat, trying not to sweat, and waiting for HR to call her for her assignment. She knew she’d be interning in one of the legal teams at the tower, but like all of these positions, they were assigned at random to keep there from being any nepotism. Not that it didn’t happen, anyway, but it did help cut down.
“Ms. Kanta?” called a cool feminine voice.
She heard, and bounced to her feet with extreme relief, “Yes, Ma’am. Here.” She kept her pace sedate as she made her way to the lady, her mind took note of the details (probably 35ish, 5’5”, Caucasian, glasses, blue eyes, brown hair, ink on left [not right] hand) as she offered her left hand for a shake. The woman almost missed a beat, but smiled beamingly at her and shook. “Ah, Ms. Kanta, you’ll do well here,” the lady said.
“Please, ma’am, I’m sure I’d be honored if you’d call me Chandra. You’ll have been the first person to greet me here at the Tower. I hope that I can be an honor to you during my tenure here.” Chandra’s voice was soft and just a little low, not enough to imply intimacy, but enough to encourage it, as if giving the moment the dignity of its real worth to her. It was, after all, a life changing event to be accepted to the Tower.
“I’m Mrs. Pennyworth, and with an opening like that I’m almost certain you will, Chandra-dear.” Here she patted Chandra’s shoulder. “You’ve been assigned to Mr. Eddings’ Persecution team. You’ll be helping with research and precedence, of course. Here’s your slip.” Handing over a small piece of paper with way too much writing on it, “I’ll take you to where you’ll get your badge, and we can pick you up a guide there. The building is quite enormous, so you’ll want to study that or you’ll be late getting anywhere tomorrow. Now you can count on me for help dear, but you may not be able to find me in this maze. I do suggest you clip your slip to your guide until you’re a little more settled in, it’s walking directions to the most important locations from the main hall.”
Not for the first time, did Chandra wonder if she were pursuing the proper course of action, but she let the words wash over her and followed Ms. Pennyworth as she walked, letting everything the older woman said soak into her brain without stopping to parse it. Her feet would remember the path without her and she’d remember the important parts of the monologue as she needed it, though she responded with encouraging responses anytime Mrs. Pennyworth paused for her understanding. At this particular moment in time her equilibrium needed her more than her body did.
She kept her self together, remembering that she had Won the Slot, with that almost as a mantra, as she was photographed and badged, guided and clipped, and finally found herself alone again, Mrs. Pennyworth’s farewell ringing in her ear. She felt sure the woman had spent more time on her than she would a normal recruit and was grateful for it. She reminded herself to send a card to her, and looked down at her guide. Where to go to meet the rest of the team…?

On the one hand, he thoroughly enjoyed it. Being able to help decide the fate of Sternbild City's criminals was something he relished, and he strove to be a fair judge in the cases he presided over. On the other hand, he really loathed the system he served during his work hours. It was often broken, letting those who deserved harsh sentences walk free. If it wasn't that, then it was the inane meetings he had to sit through as part of his Hero Curator duties. While occasionally these meetings held some interesting information, and he was able to use his influence to coax decisions one way or the other, banality often won out over actual usefulness. By the time his afternoon break had rolled around, he was feeling stiff and on edge. This was a normal thing for him however, and he dealt with it in stride, shelving the energy away for when he could tap into it properly.
Nostrils flaring with a slow exhale, he stepped out of the meeting room an into the hall. Lingering by the threshold, his slim hands smooth down his front, straightening his suit jacket and tie absently. A prim facade was vital to maintaining the air of normalcy required to juggle his double lives. Assured that his appearance was in check, he pivoted, the heels of his dress shoes clicking softly on the tile. One hand raised, he started to make his way down the hall, his long fingers brushing a few silver-grey bangs from his angular face. With a small nudge, he coaxed them behind his right ear. As he moved, his mind wandered to everything he still had to accomplish throughout the day. There was a trial he had to sit in regarding some city damages, as well as a meeting with his superiors regarding the promotion of one of his fellow judges. Beyond that, later in the evening he had more research to conduct regarding Lunatic's latest mark. Somewhere amidst all of this he had to work in food and a nap.
No rest for the wicked.
He was pulled out of his reverie by a dash of color on the periphery of his senses. A woman in a startlingly blue blouse stood in the hall, looking rather out of her element. Yuri cocked his head to the side, his confident stride coming to a slow halt. After considering a moment, he decided to step over. She wasn't familiar to him, which was odd - though many people worked in the Tower, he made sure to be able to recognize all of them, for the sake of his hobby. "Lost?" The word lilted from him in a simple, cool query, one thin 'brow arched. Now that he was closer, he noted the badge clipped to her outfit. Ah. A new hire. That explained everything. As he waited for her to respond, he smoothed another lock of silver away from his face.

[atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=border,0,true] [atrb=style, width:500px; border-top: solid 5px #0066B3, bTable] [atrb=style, background-color: #111111; border-bottom: solid 5px #0066B3, btable] She started just ever so slightly and turned to face the oncoming Justice, whom she recognized at once. She bowed with her hands and therefore briefcase, held in front of her, almost defensively. “Good Afternoon, Justice Petrov.” She replied in a… mostly even… tone. Her fingers fiddled with the handle of her case nervously. One day, one day, she might just have the courage, the audacity, to aspire to be on his Team. She imagined that He must have one. As of this minute, however, she was mostly terribly embarrassed.
As most legal students did, she kept a close eye on cases, and those she might end up working for or against. While someone of her own philosophical bent might have wanted to only work for Persecutions, she had a more Balanced view of Justice. She was just as happy to work for Defense, but only when she could be certain of the accused’s Innocence. It was easier to be sure of someone’s Guilt, though, than to be sure of someone’s Innocence.
One of the things she admired in Justice Petrov was that, if one could pay close attention, even though he’d uphold the court’s decision to the letter, one could tell if he was not convinced of its accuracy. She knew, from her close observation of the records of his cases, that he was the one Justice who was interested in exactly that. Many of the others, while good people, tended to end up becoming complacent after a while, simply accepting the verdicts handed to them. But Not, she thought, Yuri Petrov. No, he was of a different order all together. He had his own moral compass, and it was terribly strong. She had entertained, as most young people might, the notion that if she one day met the man they were sure to be kindred spirits, if only they could get past the social wall that everything that was different about their lives constructed between them. Never, of course, having the audacity to think that they might one day, actually meet.
And here he was, to witness her being lost, on the first day of her new job. She was blushing as she replied, “I fear I am… Lost, that is. I was on my way out and I find myself turned around. I was thinking that I’d familiarize myself with the tower, but even with the dratted map I’m not sure which hall way this Is. I’m sorry; I must sound a right half-wit. ” She almost stumbled to the end of the sentence as she realized she was rambling at him. She brushed back her braid which had fallen forward over her shoulder when she bowed, and then mortified again, as she realized she’d omitted introducing herself after denying him of his own introduction.
“Ah, how rude of me, I’m Chandra Kanta, by the way… not that’s it’s of any particular interest to someone as illustrious as yourself, sir.” She couldn’t seem to stop blushing in her embarrassment, nor would the rambling quit. How awkward. She thought. She couldn’t blame him for the timing, but she was hoping that she could salvage even a little dignity from the mess she’d made of her first meeting with him. There is absolutely no chance he’ll forget me now. I’ve made too much of a botch of it! A perfect way to end what had started out a beautiful morning.

They seemed to fall at two extremes with little variation. You had those who attempted to become overly friendly in an attempt to mask their nervousness, and then you had those who became overly polite, recognizing their nervousness. Of the pair, he preferred the latter, not simply because of the fact that they tended to feel more genuine, but also because they were easier for him to deal with. "Good afternoon," He returned quietly, with a faint nod of his head, a few long silver bangs brushing along his cheekbones. For the moment, his olive eyes remained fixated on the woman before him, taking in the little details of her appearance and mannerisms. The judge was quickly coming to the conclusion that she was exceedingly new to employment within the tower. He gained this insight not only by the expiry date of her badge, but also by the way she held herself. He was fairly confident in the fact that she likely had not met many higher ranking individuals such as himself.
To say he was scrutinizing her wasn't exactly untrue, but it wasn't in an unkind way. Rather, his head tilted attentively, his gaze was careful, thoughtful. All of his coworkers after all, were potential threats. Yuri worked with very smart individuals, it was one of the reasons he had to be so guarded. One slip and it could all come crashing down. It helped to keep him on his toes though, even with the fatigue that weighed on him most days, which was obvious thanks to the dark shading underneath his keen eyes. "It is a rather large building," He mused softly, another light nod of his head given. "Where is it you are trying to reach?" A small smile crept across his pale lips, a faint curling of the corners of his mouth that didn't quite reach his eyes.
Had he been a laughing type, he may have chuckled at how quick she was to put herself down. Instead he let out a soft 'hm', and canted his head to the side. "Ms. Kanta," He commented softly in greeting, noting the lack of wedding band on her ring finger and adjusting the title appropriately. "I strive to take interest in all of my coworkers," Yuri stated plainly, allowing his smile to widen by a fraction. "I would introduce myself but you are already acquainted with me it seems."

The records of your more high profile cases, at least the open ones, are used by the graduate classes. I've much enjoyed watching you work, sir. But I wouldn't presume to say acquainted. Out of respect, sir. To answer the last statement first..." she trailed off for a moment shaking her head a little. Bollox, she thought, exasperated with herself. "As to where I was headed... I was really sort of on my way out. You see Mr. Eddings gave me the rest of the afternoon to get acquainted with the tower, so I went from his office to the courtyard because that seemed like a good place to take lunch, if not working over lunch. Then I was going to go to the main hall and follow my slip to the main places listed and try to find some way between them so I wouldn't have to run back to the Main Hall every time... and I lost my way on the way back." She had pink spots on her cheeks as she ran through the explanation, and she spent about half the time looking at the floor, rather than staring at him.
She wanted to observe him, but she knew if she let herself look at that face she'd find herself trailed off and staring before she had time to think of something else. His green eyes were more arresting and penetrating than she'd guessed they might be. He didn't seem cruel or kind, just sort of detached-ly interested. As some one might observe a vaguely interesting lab experiment or … and she straightened her back and smiled at him, realizing that he was only an inch or two taller than herself, even if the force of his personality caused him to feel much larger.
“Truly, I'm sorry to ramble at you, I'm simply nervous, it being my first day and you being such a notable a person. I had always told myself though, that people who are notable probably get tired of others being flustered at them. So I'll try not to embarrass myself any further.” Here she looked him in the eyes for just a split second, for that was all the more she could bear. “If you would do me the kindness of directing me toward the Main Hall, I shan't take up any more of your valuable time.” She hoped that was the right blend of proper, polite, and respectful.
She wanted to add more, to tell him... but she wasn't really sure what she did want to say. Even if she said what she felt earnestly, that he was probably the most Righteous of the Justices, what would be the point. She was sure he knew himself how hard he worked, and what it cost him. She couldn't even claim to understand because her position was so far beneath his own. She'd noticed how dark the circles under his eyes were; they were even more obvious in person. But, to tell him he needed to get more rest, that would just be too wildly presumptuous.

His mind was working through possible placements for this young intern, even as he listened to her speak, nodding gently along with her words. That faint smile lingered across his features, though it had yet to progress to anything genuine, remaining instead in the realm of cool politeness. "Mr. Eddings," He echoed with a nod, one hand raised to smooth the couple of long silver locks that had jostled forward from the movement. "A rather good spot to be starting your career in, Ms. Kanta." It was, perhaps, his little way of congratulating her, yet his tone was anything but flattering, rather it maintained that even near-monotone.
When she straightened up and continued, going so far as to reach for eye contact, Yuri canted his head slightly. It was better to ramble, he supposed, than be stared at in awed silence. At least the former let him know just what the other was up to. "I see," He mused softly, "We were all flustered on our first day," Coming from someone else it may have been more reassuring, but from Yuri it fell a little flat. It wasn't purposeful, but he had never been the best at such things. His own start at Justice Tower had been rather nerve-wracking but likely not for the same reasons as the woman before him. There was always that worry that his past was going to come back to haunt him.
"I have to pass through the main hall on my way to the next meeting," He commented quietly and stepped around her to start down the hall, his pace for the time being gradual. It was an unspoken invitation, not necessarily one for social reasons...Simply one of convenience, seeing as they were both heading the same direction, why not let her follow him?

She almost followed him in silence, but her nerves, and her rather active mind, simply wouldn't let her. She responded to his small kindnesses, as superficial as they were, by opening up a little.
“I'm not unaware of my good luck. Though it's my qualifications that got me the slot I am lucky there simply wasn't someone better.” Balance in all things. Her qualifications Balanced with her Karma, and it was because she had both that she'd made it through. Her qualification would not have helped her one iota if someone with better had happened to apply in the same batch as herself, and she was Very aware of that. “Further more, I'm glad I was assigned a Prosecutions team to start with. I'm hoping to prove valuable there.” Her voice turned hard and her icy green eyes glinted in the lights as she said, “There are, I think, too many with clever Defense teams who deserve not their protection.” Her voice was deeper there and would have sounded slightly older than she had the entire time until this point.
That was, after all, the entire reason she was here. It was why she was on this path in the first place. Because humans saw in a way that Justice didn't. Justice did not discriminate between different ages. Justice had no arbitrary definition of adult or child. A monster at any age was still a monster. Justice would not see that some were wealthier than others. Even the poor could count on Justice. No, Justice was as indiscriminate as Death. That's what Karma was, though not every one believed in it. Karma was Justice in motion, and she had seen it do it's work. She had even been it's Hand.
She let those thoughts pass fleetingly through her mind as she spoke in a soft musing tone. Again, walking that line between intimacy and lack of. Her mind worked on a couple of different levels. She took in the halls ways, the light, the way her ballet shoes did Not make the same click click sound that most women's heels would. She noted the path and direction even as the rest of her mind pontificated, or fixated on his shoulder, just a little forward and to the left, with in reach that she could brush it if she wished with a familiar hand, but no, again, far too outrageous for her to even think it. No, Yuri Petrov might as well be as far from her as a star from the moon with just as much void between.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, padding: 15px; background: url(http://i.imgur.com/4fVyd.jpg); border: #333 solid 10px; width: 300px;] IT'S ME COMBINING NUMBERS IT'S ME JUST PLAYING GOD IT'S ME WHO'S MAKING RULES HERE I CANNOT COME UNDONE YOU SHOULD NEVER BE FORGIVEN As soon as he was certain she was following him, his pace settled into a smooth gait. Not fast enough to make it seem he was in a hurry, but also not slow enough to be considered relaxed. As with all things it exuded a sense of confidence. These were his grounds, and though he had yet to get to the point where he could deem his high walls unnecessary - the bureau approving of Lunatic's deeds was as unlikely as a willing reveal of his identity - he was somewhat at ease here. With his positions as head judge and hero curator he had learned the ins and outs, not only of the Tower itself but of the people within.
When Chandra began to speak, his pace slowed by a fraction, and he tilted his head just so as to give her words equal attention. Her chose of words and phrasing gave him pause, though he didn't show this outwardly beyond the slight quirk of one 'brow and the further curling of his pale lips, his smile spreading thinner across his angular face. Had he allowed the expression to linger, it may have given telltale signs of what would wear when partaking of an inside joke, but he quelled it a half-second after it's growth, schooling his features back into a professional mask. "Theoretically," Yuri commented slowly, voice pregnant with the heavy implication of the word, "I would agree with you." A little humor on his part, perhaps, though it was anything but a humorous subject.
Some did their jobs too well, for those who were undeserving, for the sake of pay. Their defendants definitely did not deserve the teams they acquired, especially when it was plainly obvious to anyone who would look that they were guilty. Yuri had long since realized however, that some people simply didn't wish to see. It was much easier to sleep at night if you ignored the stark harshness of reality. Those were the types that should never have gotten into law in the first place, but alas he had not yet hit the point where he could influence decisions over all the new hires.
Head turned, he raised one hand to fuss over a few of his long bangs once more as he cast a skewed glance at his current conversation partner. "Where is it you see yourself at your most content, Ms. Kanta?" The judge queried coolly. Though he wasn't one for small talk, some he could field rather easily. It did well to know the ambitions of those around you, in case they happened to step on your own. His chin dipped towards her with mild curiosity as he awaited an answer. Some where content to coast, but this one - he doubted she would be happy as an intern forever.

Her countenance clearing in response to his tacit approval. She knew they were in accord, but it meant a lot to her to hear him give even this theoretical assent. In a situation where her ground was shaky it a comfort to know she had something right. She considered his words her own head tilting to the opposite side in a semi-conscious reflection of his attitude. “Hmm.” she temporized momentarily.
“I'm honestly not sure, Sir. Really, I want to be where I can do the most good, where ever that is. If it's there, then that's where I will be content. If I can do more good on the Defense side,” and here she added a mental note to herself, Making sure that the bad which walks does not long walk freely. “Then, that, is where I'd like to be. I'd like to think that even if my position were behind the scenes, maybe one day assisting someone like yourself, please forgive any small presumption, that it would be because that is where I could do the most good in assisting Justice.” Here, her voice did give the word Justice it's full due. “That, Sir, is my main... almost my only... concern.”
If he were to stop and look her in the eyes at this very moment they would be burning with an almost fanatical light. Oh, he had gotten her running towards a very dangerous topic. Burning there just beneath the skin, just beneath the facade of normalcy, there lay the icy pieces of her morality. The frozen shards of her soul, sometimes cold and sharp enough to cut. She blanked her face as quickly as she could, but here, walking in his wake, it was almost easier than normal to pull that part of herself to the surface. Something in the aura of his personality made her feel armored. Or, perhaps, it was just youth's foolish blush in the face of hero worship.
She coughed slightly, turning her head. “Excuse me.” she said very softly, not clarifying if she meant for the cough or for her little lapse. She colored again slightly. This is going to be a little harder than I expected it to be, I think.

He turned his upper body slightly, as to get a better view of the young woman, as the topic of conversation had quickly moved to something he was more interesting. By her body language and vocal pattern he could guess this was something more interesting to her than simple work. Curious. Had he more faith in others, he may have ventured that this was not the simple, naive enthusiasm of someone new to this career field. For now, he simply filed that away as a possibility. He had to acquire more knowledge before he made such a judgment.
"It pays to be flexible," Yuri mused with a small nod of his head, his attention fixated on the intern's face for a moment. The look in her eyes was something familiar to him, that he glimpsed in the mirror now and then. His interest piqued, his olive gaze narrowed slightly. Not in a cruel way, but rather an outward sign of his curiosity. Albeit it lasted only for a brief moment before he gave another nod, almost as if he were reassuring himself of something, and his eyes flitted to the area in front of them. "As sometimes Justice requires different tools." It was an interesting game he was playing, and one that made his daily work ritual less boring. How much could he dance around the issue without it becoming blatantly obvious?

She felt herself treading on a dagger's edge with bloody feet. It would be so easy to fall. She was tied up in knots on the inside, though it was not common for her, she had a feeling that if she ever saw him again, this paragon would likely make her feel unworthy then as well. She wondered vaguely if any amount of exposure to his company would inure her to the feeling of inadequacy he engendered in her.
She was simply a subplot for him, and probably not even a very important one. Unless things changed. She wanted to say so much but settled on simply agreeing with him for now. Some day maybe they might speak of it in more detail, but for now, “Just so, Sir, just so.” was all she felt safe to reply and, for that moment, her voice was iron and glass.
She met his gaze steadily again, only for a second before looking away. How he burned her with those eyes. She wondered if everyone felt that way around him or if perhaps she was simply overly sensitive to him. She noticed, in looking away, that she was finally in a place she recognized and was grateful for the excuse of leave taking. “Ah, I now find myself in the proper place!” She exclaimed gently as she realized she was in one of the hallways she'd walked with Mrs. Pennyworth.
“The badge office would be down there,” she indicated the proper hall for that area,”So, I know exactly where I am now.” She turned fully towards him, steeling herself for a final exchange before fleeing his presence. She almost felt like a gazelle fleeing before a predator. So easy for it all to go bad. “It's been an honor to meet you, Sir. I hope you won't mind if I take my leave of you?” She asked in a voice that admitted it would accept his dominance in the matter, should he instruct her to continue, but hoped he would allow her to leave him now.

After her agreement with his statement he fell silent, giving an idle nod to nothing in particular. It was a comfortable sort of quiet when shared with someone who concurred with your ideas. So far she pinged on his radar as sincere, but he wasn't so trusting of others to accept that at face value. As she commented on their surroundings, he blinked once and then cast a slow glance around. Ah. Nodding once to himself, he then turned his attention back to Chandra. As she indicated she knew where she needed to go now, he offered another one of his polite smiles. "You may. It was a pleasure meeting you, Ms. Kanta. Good luck with the rest of the tower," He gave a slight bow of his head to her before he turned away. A quick check of his watch indicated he hadn't lost too much time and some of his break remained, and so he made his way towards the elevators at his usual pace.

It was only owing to the looseness, and indeed a bit to the briefness, of her skirt that she could perform the maneuver at all. The whimsy had her though, and she couldn’t help herself. “Thank you, Sir.” She said in something that might have been called a stage whisper, before she turned, en pointe, and preceded down the hall. It wasn’t exactly a spring, nor was it a walk, or a dance. She transcended walking or springing, without quite making it to the dancing.
Chandra was, after all, rather walking on air. Though she’d somewhat made a fool of herself, she didn’t feel she’d acquitted herself poorly. At the end he’d even seemed to maybe have approved of her somewhat, by his standards. She couldn’t see as a graceful departure could damage her in his eyes. She was, quite frankly, too happy to have met him and spoken with him (a man who effected the world as she knew it) and had him almost seem to agree with her. It was Quite a lot more than she’d ever hoped or dreamed of.
Furthermore, that little whimsy kept her from doing something a hundred times more foolish or childlike. It kept her from running down the hall way squeeing, for instance, which would have been MUCH more damaging than her little bow. She spent the rest of her time finding her way down the various halls, but she couldn’t keep from smiling any time she had to go back down the one he’d walked with her.

Taking in the flourishing bow he was given, his lips quirked upwards in a faint twitch of a smile. Another nod was given towards the intern before he turned back towards his destination and continued on his way, one hand smoothing over his long hair.
---Epic Time Skip---
The gavel gave a resounding crack throughout the room. He had come to love the noise over the years, a symbol of his position of power to be able to salvage what little justice remained in the court system. It also carried a sort of finality, especially in the context of closing meetings. It was a sound of relief too, especially when dealing with such things as droll divorce cases or civil suits. Certainly, they had their own justice that needed to be tended to, but so many boiled down to petty squabbling that wore at his faith in mankind in general. No wonder it was so easy for murderers to run free when so many lost sight of what was important.
Hands steepled, he rested his chin against his fingertips idly as he watched the crowd file out of the courtroom. His olive eyes narrowed in thought for a moment, before he turned his attention to the papers on his desk. His lips thinned into a vaguely amused smile. Mr. Eddings' case was up next, how curious. Perhaps his afternoon was about to get interesting. A soft, contemplative hum, barely audible, rumbled from deep within his throat. Shifting his weight, he straightened his posture in preparation for the scene to come.

A skilled and attentive eye might have caught a black suit with a sky blue shirt, some passed papers, a polite bow. Then Persecution arrived, several minutes before Defense would.
Mr. Eddings was a tall and slender man, slightly balding, late 40s early 50s. He was neatly dressed in an old fashioned corduroy suit and vest, with a brown leather briefcase. He had a slightly bemused smile on his face. This would indicate to anyone who knew him passably that something was, as they say colloquially, up.
He had in fact had a rather odd incident occur the day before as well as another one just before he arrived here. His new staff member, the Kanta girl, had presented him with two documents that he’d been trying to get for the past several months. These cases had a long set up time, while both teams set up their cases, but his team and the police before them, had been unable to obtain phone records for the Defendant’s burn phone. (A burn phone being a phone which is supposed to be untraceable and not connected legally to any given network.)
That had been her first little miracle. He’d been hesitant to accept it at first, but after she explained how she’d gone through channels to get a civilian expert into evidence, and her expert had obtained the records, he had no qualms about its permissibility. The data was legally obtained and he’d present it to both the Presiding Judge and Defense at the same time.
He still hadn’t been sure they’d be able to pull it off since they didn’t have a solid motive. The small pension and meager savings involved hardly constituted a motive. However, that Kanta girl again. They’d looked over the transactions time and time again, but she’d been the one to link the odd numbers and the hidden purchases, the things that weren’t quite right, to secret off shore accounts. There was the motive. All in black and white, finally, and handed to him just seconds before he had to go through the door.
He’d been so frustrated by the case. He’d known, but wasn’t able to prove, that the Defendant was guilty. He’d felt in his bones with all his experience, but the data hadn’t been there. She’d provided it. He’d already asked the rest of the team why they hadn’t been able to get it. They claimed she obviously had contacts that would prove invaluable if they could be used more than once. Eliza (a long time member) had actually implied she’d made it up, but all the paper trails were there.
Well, no matter. Defense had arrived with the Defendant; it was his moment to move. He looked up at Justice Petrov. “May I have permission to approach the bench with my counterpart, Justice Petrov? I believe I have additional material that will prove pertinent to the case.”
